Many owners can determine why their dog is barking just by hearing the particular bark.  For example, a dog’s bark sounds different when he wishes to play compared to when he wants to come in from the yard.

If you want to learn to stop dog barking excessively it is essential to determine why he’s barking.

It may need some time to teach your dog to bark less. Regrettably, it’s just not realistic to count on a quick fix or to expect that your dog will stop barking altogether.

Your goal will be to decrease, instead of eliminate, the amount of barking. Keep in mind some dogs are more prone to barking than others. Additionally, some dog breeds are called “barkers,” and it can be trickier to reduce barking in individuals of these breeds.

You first need to know the 9 reasons why dog's bark.  I list these in my Free downloadable pdf report.

The first task toward reducing your dog’s barking is to figure out the kind of bark your dog is expressing. The following questions can guide you to precisely choose which type of barking your dog is doing to help you best address your dog’s problem.

Once you establish the reasons why your dog barks, it is the first step toward training on how to stop a dog from barking.

The first key to dog training is super simple: You just have to win your dog’s mind. If you don’t do this before you begin training, you will find yourself struggling all the way through the process.

By winning your dog’s mind, the idea is that your dog will look to you for the answer to all the questions life asks them. They will rely on you to make the decision, and they will trust that you will make the right one.

This goes along with establishing yourself as the pack leader, and it is critical to achieving control over your dog’s behavior.

The second key to successful dog training is motivating your dog to listen.
Food is a motivator for all dogs, but also praising them.  Training should be based on the principles of positive reinforcement.

That is, reward ‘good’ behavior – when the dog is quiet give him a food treat or a pat on the head, and avoid rewarding ‘unwanted’ behavior – when the dog barks ignore the behavior.

Training should not involve punishment which tends to exacerbate the barking problem.   Never yell at your dog to stop dog barking as that just accentuates the problem.  A lot of times, they think you are just joining in and they will bark even more.

Secondly, you need to exercise your dog.  Depending on the breed, many dogs need a lot of exercise and if you keep them in the house all day, they get bored and anxious.  Thus, they will be more hyped up and want to bark.

Getting exercise or playing with them with their favorite dog toy, will help develop through their training while you bond with them and improve their overall health.

It’s really a win-win-win situation!

The third and final key to successfully training your dog is really two parts...staying consistent and practicing regularly.

You cannot just do training once a week or once a month.  It has to be a daily thing and has to be a constant thing to stop dog barking excessively.

Learning how to stop a dog from barking, means having consistent training commands and rewards every time they bark or yip.

Also, it is NOT recommended to use a shock collar or spray collar.

Majority of vets and professionals DON’T recommend the use of these devices to stop your dog barking for a number of reasons.

I explain this in my FREE ebook on how to stop your dog from barking.
